Seratonin, Chronic Heath Issues, and Threat…

I spent a week at the Cleveland Clinic years ago having studies done to determine the root cause of so many chronic health issues. Armed with as many as 20 x-rays, mri’s and other scans, results from a number of different lab tests, and notes from at least five different specialists, I traveled to Ohio. I met with several specialists and had a battery of tests performed through the week. The trip proved quite fruitful, and I was fascinated with the results!

What happened to my body? My first surgery was at 13 years old to remove a benign breast tumor. I was often ill throughout high school, suggesting a weak immune system. And my monthly cycle … forget it! I had severe pain and bleeding, clotting, and irregularity. Doctors put me on the pill, and they never could find one that effectively altered my cycle or symptoms. Then, at 20, I noticed a large lump in my throat. Studies revealed tumors in my thyroid; another surgery uncovered three benign tumors. Doctors removed two of them. One was golf-ball sized and swallowed the entire right side of my gland. They removed one of the two remaining tumors on the left side, opting to leave a pea-sized tumor and half the gland.

Through the years I have had an additional thirteen or so necessary surgeries for a variety of ailments, including additional breast tumors (benign), grossly-diseased tonsils, chronic bleeding and other issues related to the colon and rectal area, trauma to joints, etc. My uterus was removed at 30 years old, after continuing issues and a very challenging 2nd pregnancy. Additionally, I have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, orthostatic dizziness, sleep disturbance, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, reynauds syndrome, hypertension, migraines, chronic nerve pain, back pain, disc compression in neck area, tmj, significant rectocele and hemmorhoids, (both corrected by surgery twice previously and later determined an extra 2-feet of colon was the culprit), and a non-specific connective tissue/autoimmune disorder.

Why does a body, still so young and appearing to be so healthy, have so many health issues?

Seratonin plays a huge part. It is amazing what this one hormone is responsible for controlling in our bodies! It controls the sympathetic/autonomic nervous system. When the body does not produce enough of this hormone, it can cause problems for a number of body systems. If the body d0oes not produce seratonin for years on end, the depleted systems begin to misfire. This can cause significant chronic health problems.

A number of different genetic issues can cause these health problems. Unfortunately, my younger daughter’s health attests to this. And every body is different. Many people with signficant seratonin depletion show signs of depression or fibromyalgia without a number of additional physical health ailments.

One thing doctors and researchers do know for certain is that seratonin is produced in a very specific area of the brain. This happens to be the area of the brain that goes on auto-pilot when the body faces danger. God created our bodies so intricately, when we are threatened, our brain functions change. The area at the base of the brain producing seratonin slows considerably; yet, the area of the brain which kicks out increased adrenaline, sending us into fight or flight, becomes significantly heightened.

We are designed to deal with these changes in our brain for short periods of time. Many of us who were abused as children or have spent adult years in abusive conditions have literally had changes take place in our brains. Living in a heightened state of fight or flight for years on end, the area of the body that produces seratonin often becomes permanently suppressed. Unfortunately, when this happens, it causes significant problems with our bodies, and many of these problems can become irreversible.

Synthetic seratonin can help.

One Response to “Seratonin, Chronic Heath Issues, and Threat…”

  1. Sorry, this is so hard to read in black! I wanted to say that you have expressed what I feel has happened to me. I have so many physical problems including fibro, lupus, IBS, heart disease, depression, high BP, underactive thyroid and so on that I wondered if my abusive childhood and later on my 25 years in an abusive marriage were connected. It would seem that they are. I have no seratonin either and take anti-depressants ro replace it. Good post- I agree with your thinking…
